DECORATIVE WOODEN FLUTED DOUBLE BOWL BY DAVID PYE OBE

Wonderful hand turned decorative fluted double bowl by David Pye OBE

Hand produced with decorative flutes to the bowl, very nicely executed, with Pye’s distinctive decorative fluting to the inside of the bowl.

Made from solid Sycamore, dates from 1980s, the fluting is produced using Pye’s “Fluting Engine”.  Despite being a machine, the “Fluting Engine” requires human judgement to guide the cutter.  David Pye used this tool to create work that was both precise and, because it was still hand-guided, allowed for slight variations, avoiding the sterile appearance of fully automated mass production.

He was also a professor of furniture design at the Royal College of Art.
